All initiation of force is a violation of someone else’s rights, whether initiated by an individual or the state, for the benefit of an individual or group of individuals, even if it’s supposed to be for the benefit of another individual or group of individuals.

An innovative initiative is taking place in the Philippines to bring sustainable lighting to homes in impoverished communities. Empty plastic bottles are installed in the roof, filled with water and bleach they refract sunlight. These “solar light bulbs” provide light equivalent to a 55watt light bulb.

  • *Background: my father is a veterinarian, small government enthusiast, and hilarious motherfucker. This conversation was absoutely serious.*
  • Dad: Hey, guess what!? I'm officially the CEO of a corporation! I just filled out all the paperwork.
  • Me: Wait, WHAT?! Run that by me again?
  • Dad: You heard right. According to the US government, I'm the CEO of a corporation.
  • Me: And what does your company do, exactly?
  • Dad: It buys veterinary supplies and sells them to veterinary practices, or rather, a veterinary practice. Namely, we sell them to our only customer, myself.
  • Me: So, you buy supplies and sell them to yourself because... Why?
  • Dad: Because corporations pay lower taxes than small businesses.

A government is the most dangerous threat to man’s rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.
Ayn Rand (via baseconnect)

Mr. Obama has placed himself at the helm of a top secret “nominations” process to designate terrorists for kill or capture, of which the capture part has become largely theoretical. He had vowed to align the fight against Al Qaeda with American values; the chart, introducing people whose deaths he might soon be asked to order, underscored just what a moral and legal conundrum this could be.

Mr. Obama is the liberal law professor who campaigned against the Iraq war and torture, and then insisted on approving every new name on an expanding “kill list,” poring over terrorist suspects’ biographies on what one official calls the macabre “baseball cards” of an unconventional war. When a rare opportunity for a drone strike at a top terrorist arises — but his family is with him — it is the president who has reserved to himself the final moral calculation.
